Sobey’s Holiday Fundraising Campaign a Tremendous Success!

The Tobermory Food Bank thanks all those who donated last December at Peacock’s Foodland Holiday Fundraising Campaign that ran from December 2nd to December 24th, 2024. On December 14th any donations made on that date were matched by Sobeys Inc. Tobermory Food Bank received $3,801.81 as a result of this campaign. We are very grateful to Rick Peacock and Peacock’s Foodland Staff for their part in this effort. All donations are appreciated, but a donation of this size coming during the winter helps so much as we assist those facing Food Insecurity. Those who find it difficult to find enough monies for food after paying increased heating costs in addition to housing and transportation costs.

One of the ways that the Tobermory Food Bank helps clients is once a month they are given Foodland Grocery Cards. Singles receive a $20 card and families a $40 card. This practice has been in place since the Food Bank began in 2008. The thought behind this practice was to enable the clients to purchase needed items that may not be on the Food Bank shelves at any given time. Also to assist those who may have particular dietary needs or restrictions that the Food Bank may not meet. As well as the Tobermory Food Bank does not always have fresh fruits and vegetables that provide the balanced nutrition so vital to good health. Although Grocery Cards are often referred to as Gift Cards, for this particular purpose they are used to purchase supplemental groceries on a monthly basis.

With the forecasted economic impacts ahead, we anticipate an increase of clients. But the history of this community, even before there were Food Banks, is that those in need are supported and we at the Tobermory Food Bank know that the wonderful support we receive will continue. If you wish to donate there are several ways. You can drop off a donation at the Food Bank during regular hours, Tuesdays from 1-3 p.m. at The Meeting Place. Mail a cheque to Tobermory Food Bank, Box 144, Tobermory N0H 2R0. Use e-transfer tobermoryfoodbank@gmail.com and include your name and address in the message section. Also, you can donate at Peacock’s Foodland at the cash register. All donations $20 or more are issued a tax receipt.

Just a reminder, there is now a box for donations at the Tobermory Community Centre. We are very pleased to say that donations are now beginning to be dropped off there. Again, thanks to the Municipality for allowing us to have a location that is used for many community activities. Good news, days are getting longer and Spring is almost here.
